QC20 Ballbar Training

Dates: June 23 – June 26, 2025
Time: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Cost: $1,977 per seat, learning materials and lunch provided
Location: KES Machine Training Center, Newington, CT

This course involves a careful examination of the use of a telescoping ballbar as a tool for evaluating displacement errors on machines or devices which work within three dimensional rectangular coordinate systems. Emphases are on development of basic metrology skills, visualization, and solutions for spatial geometric problems using telescoping ballbars on linear motion CNC devices.

This is an introductory course designed for individuals looking to develop skills to record error events and interpret information collected. Although this course is introductory, it meets the needs of many students with other interests as a refresher course for improving telescoping ballbar analysis skills, a course for students interested in pursuing, selling and supporting metrology measurement services or a course that simply satisfies a student’s curiosity in measurement using telescoping ballbars.

This is an interactive lecture structured course whereby fresh topics are presented by the instructor, theory and hardware is explained, formulas are introduced, scenarios are presented, and problems are worked out sequentially by the instructor and students.

Course Objectives:

  • Familiarization with basics concepts of metrology
  • Familiarization with errors found in rectangular coordinate systems
  • Develop an understanding of linear motion carriage errors
  • Knowledge to setup telescoping ballbar hardware
  • Ability to differentiate between machine and test errors on analysis plots
  • Understand software interface for efficient capture and analysis
  • Ability to evaluate and quantify telescoping ballbar polar plot test data
